P49-M flood control project protects La Union residents vs. La Niña

MALASIQUI: A PHP49 million worth 574-meter long flood control structure along the Aringay River is protecting residents of the villages of Lloren, Pideg, and Caoigue in Tubao town, La Union.

Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Ilocos Region information officer Esperanza Tinaza, in a statement on Wednesday, said the project has a height of 4.2 meters, designed to withstand the powerful flow of the Aringay River.

‘This structure is crucial in preventing the river from overflowing and causing damage to the surrounding agricultural lands and residential areas,’ she said.

Tinaza said the agency is committed to implementing similar projects in the region ‘to further enhance the resilience of La Union’s infrastructure against natural disasters.’

Construction of the structure, funded under this year’s national budget, started last Feb. 6 and was completed May 5.

Aringay River is among the rivers local authorities focus on during heavy rains and typhoon since it is a confluence of several tributaries i
n the region.
