Over P68-M aid released to El Niño-hit families in W. Visayas


ILOILO CITY: Over PHP68.57 million in combined aid from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and local government units were provided to families affected by the El Niño weather phenomenon in Western Visayas.

Data from the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) released Wednesday showed that the assistance consists of 102,817 food packs worth over PHP64.8 million; 187 boxes of food items valued at PHP248,200; PHP1.28 million financial aid; and 1,207 sacks of food items amounting to PHP2.21 million to 45 cities and municipalities in the region.

The province of Negros Occidental received 37, 367 food packs, followed by Antique with 33,054, Iloilo has 18,880, Aklan has 10,707 packs, Capiz with 1,809, and Guimaras has 1,000 food packs.

‘The DSWD6, through the Disaster Response Section of Disaster Response Management Division, continuously coordinates with other local government units for the immediate release and distribution of food packs in their localities,’ the DSWD said in a statement.

The
department still has over PHP98.6 million available relief resources, consisting of PHP5 million standby funds and available food and non-food items.

The May 10 report of the Disaster Response Operations Monitoring and Information Center (DROMIC) of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDDRMC) showed 325,469 families or 1,213,740 persons were affected by the weather phenomenon.

The total losses to agriculture caused by the El Niño phenomenon stand at over PHP1.494 billion.
