RAHMAT MOHAMAD TO STEP DOWN AS SUHAKAM CHAIRMAN ON AUG 31

Legal and human rights expert Prof Datuk Dr Rahmat Mohamad will step down as the Chairman of the Human Rights Commission Of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) on Aug 31, according to the Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) of the Prime Minister’s Department.

BHEUU in a statement today said the government would appoint an interim chairman to carry out the duties of SUHAKAM until a new chairman is appointed with the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

According to BHEUU, Rahmat who was appointed as SUHAKAM chairman on June 22, 2022 has now been appointed as the Asian International Arbitration Center Advisory Board chairman for the 2023-2025 on Aug 23, 2023.

“Since his appointment, Rahmat has implemented various initiatives in SUHAKAM, including the success of the debate session on the commission’s annual report and financial statement for the year 2020 in the Dewan Rakyat on June 12 to 14,” said BHEUU in the statement.

BHEUU said the appointment coincides with his background in the field of International Law as well as his experience as the fifth Secretary-General of the Asian African Legal Consultative Organisation (AALCO).
