SUKMA 2024: TERENGGANU EYEING EIGHT GOLDS IN SAILING


KUALA NERUS, The Terengganu sailing team is targeting eight gold medals at the 21st Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Sarawak from Aug 17 to 24.

Head coach Abdul Rani Idris said among the events they expect to excel in are the Men’s International 420, Women’s International 420, Women’s RS One, Men’s RS One, Men’s ILCA 4 and Women’s ILCA 4.

He said Terengganu will be sending 17 athletes to compete in 13 of the 14 events to be contested.

“We are targeting six to eight gold medals at this SUKMA. We are not targeting gold in certain events but may spring a surprise.

“They include the Team Optimist, Men’s Optimist and Women’s Optimist. We are also aiming to win medals in all the 13 events we will participate in,” he told Bernama when contacted.

Abdul Rani said the Terengganu squad is an equal mix of old and new faces, aged between 12 and 19.

He said the team is now in the final phase of training, focusing on sharpening their skills and boat maintenance ability.

The team is expected to spend two or three weeks in M
iri for training and acclimatisation.

“At SUKMA 2022 in Kuala Lumpur, Terengganu won seven golds, three silvers and one bronze.

“We hope to do better this time and instal Terengganu as SUKMA 2024 champions,” he said, adding that they expect a strong challenge from Sarawak, Sabah, Kedah and Selangor.
