Temporary Results: CPP Wins 82.30% Votes

The ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) gained 6,398,311 of the total 7,774,276 valid votes, or 82.30 percent, and the royalist FUNCIPEC Party came in second with 716,490 votes, or 9.21 percent, in the July National Election, according to the temporary results released this morning by the National Election Committee (NEC).

Therefore, CPP may get 120 seats at the National Assembly, while the FUNCINPEC Party the remaining 5 seats. The other 16 participating political parties could not have enough votes to obtain a seat in the 7th legislature of the National Assembly.

There were in total 8,214,430 votes cast, of which 440,154 were invalid, NEC pointed out.

According to NEC, any participating political party can file a complaint against the temporary results at the NEC or Constitutional Council within 72 hours after they were announced on Aug. 1 at 7:00 am.

The official results are expected to be proclaimed between Aug. 9 and Sept. 4, 2023.

H.E. Hang Puthea, a NEC Member and Spokesperson, has recently said that this election is in full compliance with the Constitution of Cambodia. It was peaceful, 18 political parties joined the race, and over 84 percent cast their votes.

Any criticism on the election is obviously baseless and politicised and urged the critics to be more reasonable, he underlined.

The 7th National Election took place on July 23 in 23,789 polling stations throughout the country under the witness of nearly 100,000 national and international observers who concluded that this election was conducted smoothly and orderly in a free, fair and transparent manner.
