UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI PETRONAS’ RISE IN GLOBAL RANKINGS A TESTAMENT TO EXCELLENCE

KUALA LUMPUR, Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) has made a remarkable leap in the Times Higher Education (THE) Young University Rankings 2024, climbing an impressive 47 spots to secure the 32nd position from its previous ranking of 79th.

In a statement today, UTP said this is a significant accomplishment, establishing the university’s position as a leading institution for higher education on the global stage and maintaining its position as Malaysia’s number one university in the rankings for the fourth consecutive year since 2021.

‘Established in 1997, UTP is a young university that has made remarkable strides in THE Young University Rankings.

‘This ranking recognises the world’s top universities under 50 years old, and UTP, at only 27 years old, has consistently demonstrated exceptional progress, solidifying its position among the world’s rising stars in higher education,’ it said.

The statement added that over the past seven years, UTP has climbed steadily, moving from the 151-200 band (2017-2018) to
the 101-150 band (2019-2020), followed by the 134th position in 2021, 119th in 2022, and a significant jump to 79th in 2023.

‘This year’s achievement of 32nd position marks the university’s most successful year in the rankings to date,’ it said, adding that UTP’s commendable rise in the rankings highlights its commitment to providing world-class education, fostering groundbreaking research, and nurturing future-ready graduates.

Meanwhile, UTP vice-chancellor Prof Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib said this achievement is a source of immense pride for the entire UTP community and a testament to the unwavering dedication and commitment of the university’s faculties, staff, students, and alumni.

‘We express our gratitude to PETRONAS, industry partners, and academic collaborators who have contributed to UTP’s achievements.

‘We are particularly proud because it demonstrates our commitment to providing a world-class education that is not only academically rigorous but also fosters innovation, technopreneurship,
and social responsibility,’ he added.

UTP actively supports Petronas’ vision for a sustainable future by integrating sustainability principles into its curriculum, research activities, and student experiences, ultimately contributing to achieving Net Zero Carbon Emission (NZCE) by 2050.

The university is well-positioned to play a leading role in this endeavour, with a strong focus on science, engineering, and technology disciplines that are crucial for the development of sustainable solutions.
